15 Source for my rant about Julius Caesar and his assassins.
I’ve been reading about the collapse of the Roman Republic for almost half
my life, and that rant drew from my personal knowledge of the time period,
it’s hard to pick one specific “source,” but if you think I’m lying and want to
fact-check me, or you’re just interested in learning more about the time
period, I will recommend 2 books. They address the subject of Julius Caesar
from two different viewpoints, and the truth probably lies somewhere in the
middle. And that is, after all, a good starting place for any historical
understanding. Last I checked, both cost less than $10.

16 Sources for my numbers about the American Revolution.
…you know future generations, it’s funny. When I re-read my words scolding
so-called patriots for not knowing American history, I knew that I necessarily
had to cite some sources to prove my own version of events; and I was
stunned by how hard it was to get accurate, all-encompassing data on the
American Revolution. As a history teacher, I’ve picked up bits of trivia about
the American Revolution’s battles on other continents and such, but when I
sat down to get some sources to back up my claims, I found remarkably little
detailed analysis of how these events fit into the big picture. True, there were
some textbooks on Amazon, selling for wildly inflated prices, which seemed
to cover the subject, but I can hardly blame the general public if they’ve never
read those. Any ordinary person who was curious about American history
and typed “Revolutionary War” into a search engine seemed to get a very
misleading version of events. I was shocked when I discovered that.
The real, “big picture” truth about the Revolutionary War is, in addition to
obviously being a British civil war with heavy French meddling, it was also a
war that killed large numbers of Germans, Native Americans and people of
African descent. And it was also a war fought all over the world. The French
had naval battles in the English Channel, off the Coast of India, and around
numerous Caribbean islands. The Spanish declared war on Britain and laid
siege to Gibraltar (a city in Europe under British rule). The Dutch declared
war on Britain, and although they were only a handful naval battles with
few deaths, the British devastated the Dutch Republic by seizing most of the
Dutch colonial holdings in Africa, Asia, and the West Indies, and by
blockading Dutch waters. These things all drew British resources away from
America and heavily impacted the decisions of the British forces who
remained, yet we hardly ever collect all that data in the same place! It’s all
segregated and cut into articles about what happened inside America’s
current borders, focused only on American gains and losses. Which, hey!
America’s an important part of the story! But it’s not the whole story. There
seems to be a huge gap in the historical record here. We need more people to
write histories of the war that tie all those pieces together and show the big

picture. And we need to make that history available to people on the search-
engine-ready websites that most ordinary Americans get their history from.

If you know of such a history, please let me know at
https://ChasingHistoryProject.com/contact/

For my purposes, I set out to find a simple article to cite, which tallied
together all the deaths from all the different groups who fought in the war, to
find the total number of people who died. Easy, right? But I was unable to
find such an article. So as an added bonus for you, I quickly threw together a
dime-store estimate myself by combining different segregated estimates that
were readily available. According to my roughshod research, the American
Revolutionary War had the following deaths, note that American and British
numbers include people of African descent in their totals, including enslaved
people who fought in exchange for a promise of freedom:
British: at least 24,000 killed by combat and disease, the articles I
read cautioned these are official British estimates released at the
time, which probably understate losses.
American: at least 23,800 killed by combat and disease.
Germans (aka “Hessians”): at least 7,554 killed by combat or disease
.
French: at least 2,112 killed by combat, I could not find numbers on
disease.
Native American: I found no readily available numbers of Native
Americans killed, which is kind of amazing. Historians agree that
many Native people fought on both sides of the war and considering
that the Americans literally attacked native civilians and burned
entire villages to the ground, I gotta think a lot of people died. (I will
also note the Americans claimed their attack on civilians was revenge
for Natives attacking their civilians first, to which the Natives would
no-doubt point to atrocities the colonists committed before that, all
going back in a spiral of death and blame spanning hundreds of
years… but one group suffered a lot more than the other in that
blood- soaked equation) For my purposes, all I need to know is that a
significant number of Natives were killed and should be included in
my estimate, but I don’t know how many. I don’t want to be accused
of inflating numbers, so for the moment, I’ll just assume that at a
bare minimum, Native Americans suffered at least as many deaths
as the French. It’s sloppy and unscientific, and if you have a better
solution, please do tell, but for now, it’s the best I got.
So that puts our bare minimum, back-of-the-envelope estimate for total
deaths at… 59,578

53 Description of the Storming of the Bastille, another time a lightly armed
mob with vaguely defined goals pushed their way into a government building
during the early French Revolution. Although the storming of the Bastille was
somewhat less vague on their goals, they wanted gunpowder and to free
prisoners, it was still very disorganized, no one realized for example there
were only 7 prisoners actually in the building, and the event unfolded in a
bunch of haphazard, barely coordinated pushes by the mob. I maintain that
this event had far more in common with the Storming of the Capitol than the
Battles of Lexington and Concord did.

122 Source for photo of the zip-tie guy.
You know what? I REALLY wish I’d screenshotted this, because when I first
saved the link, I could have sworn it was a fact-check article claiming to
prove the guy “brought” zip-ties, which is false. When I checked the article
again it said he was “with” zip-ties which is true. I swear it didn’t used to say
that. Probably when people like Glen Greenwald started complaining about
no one getting their facts right, they finally adjusted it, but the correct thing
to do in that situation is draw attention to the fact that made a mistake and
are issuing a correction, you’re not supposed to change it and hope no one
noticed, that makes it hard for people to keep the real truth straight. I could
just be remembering it wrong, but it was only a couple weeks ago and I recall
it so distinctly… this little incident is a good example of the ethereal nature
of truth in the early 2020s.
