Whatever the reason, I don’t want to talk to current generations, I’d rather talk past them. The only hope I see is if future generations avoid the mistakes we made. If someday, some high school kid says my project made them think a little bit about the chaotic embarrassment known as the early 2020s, and how to stop their civilization from getting as pathetic as ours, well, that’s what “winning” looks like to me.

On January 6th, 2021, I’d already been “Chasing History” for months. I was driving around the country, sleeping in my van, trying to document what I half-jokingly suggested might be the collapse of American civilization. I attended any event that seemed to be a manifestation of the tensions in our society and the cracks they were creating. I interviewed people at MAGA and BLM events, I chased stories about Proud Boys and Antifa, I even interviewed witnesses to riots that ended just a day previously. But I always seemed be one step behind witnessing the really big events. I chased history, but I never caught anything.
But on January 6th, the muse smiled on me, and I was in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. I was already researching a writing about social unrest, and suddenly the crowd I was already documenting chased Congress from the Capitol building. And I was right there, recorder in hand, ready to interview people as they left the building and ask them what they did and why they did it.
In addition to my first-hand accounts of what I witnessed, the book also features interviews with other witnessed, pictures I took myself and an analysis at the end, telling you what I think really happened, based on my personal investigation.
